Aotea

Located on Aotea (Great Barrier Island), we were tasked with designing an additional accommodation building to sit in harmony with an existing bach.

The new structure was designed not to dominate the site, but to sit lightly and in balance with the surrounding natural environment.

Nestled among the site’s existing Pōhutukawa, the building is elevated on foundations that create a sense of breathing space between the structure and the earth.

A large central opening connects the interior with the outdoors, allowing the native bush and sea breeze to flow freely through the space and enhancing the continuity of views from the existing bach through the new sleepout.

Construction commenced mid 2025.
